Over spring break, I didn't go anywhere, but I still made the best of it. I was home alone with my sister. We played lots of games and tried to make weird types of food that we failed at. I loved to make homemade ice cream because we never failed at it and it was really yummy. it got really messy but it was fun.
My sister and I played basketball in our driveway and jumped on our trampoline. When it got warm, instead of staying inside, we rode our bikes to the lake that we live next to and hung out there. We also cleaned the house which was fun when you did it with your siblings. During the days that my parents were gone, my sister and I had movie nights where we built forts and made popcorn and watched Netflix. That was really fun. Whenever we would get bored, we would play video games or look up random DIYs and try them. Most of them failed, but it was still fun. When my parents came home, we went to the movies and went out to dinner for the three days they were back.

¨The Boy in the Striped Pajamas¨ and ¨Night¨ have lots of similarities. For example, they both take place during World War ll and have to do with the holocaust. They both have characters that live in a concentration camp that are relatively young. They both have crematoriums and gas chambers. Also, they both include beatings to the Jews and mean soldiers.
But, the two have differences, too. The main character in Night is a Jew, but the main character in The Boy in the striped pajamas is a German boy. Also, Night is a lot more violent and shows the true happenings of the holocaust, while The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is more for kids and is only violent at the end. Also, Night has a lot more details and leaves you with more questions. My thoughts and understandings of the holocaust have changed a lot since we have read and researched about it. I understand a lot more of how big the issue actually was, and how horrible it was. When I try to imagine these events happening to me, it is impossible. Personally, I liked The Boy in the Striped Pajamas better because it was more watcher-friendly and I could understand it better. Tough Questions
pg 76 A point where the character stops and asks themselves a tough question. On page 76, Elie is extremely scared that his dad is dead, but finds him. He gets really happy and asks himself, "Were there still miracles on this earth?" Contrasts and contradictions pg 85 A character's actions or thoughts are the opposite of what you would expect. On page 85, Elie was told by the guards that he had to move faster and that it would make him warmer. I thought he was going to disagree and not go faster, but he did agree and followed the SS's orders. Again and Again pg 100 When an image, word, or situation is repeated so often that the reader wonders at its importance. On page 100, it mentions how the nights were really cold and that the people were cold too several times in the train car. Over winter break I celebrated Christmas with my family. My family did our usual tradition where all of my mom's side comes over to our house and we cook a huge dinner/ lunch. My family opens up all of our presents before my family comes since most of my mom's side of the family lives in Iowa City. After Christmas at my house, we sometimes go to my grandma's house and eat there.
On New Year's, my family buys sparkling apple cider and we drink it at midnight. We stay up till midnight and watch the ball drop. Then I usually go to bed. Also, I had a couple of sleepovers with friends. Before Christmas, I went shopping several times which got kind of annoying since we always forgot something like a present for somebody and we had to go back to the store. Overall my winter break was average, but still really fun. I recently read an article called "8 life skills all 18 year olds should have". It includes great points about what skills 18 year olds should have and why usually they don't have them. The skills that are included in the article are "18 year olds should be able to manage money, talk to strangers, find his way around campus, manage assignments, run a household, handle personal problems, cope with problems, and take risks." . It then proceeds to say why they should have them or why they are blocked from having them.
Since I'm not 18, I can't really tell if I'm in a good position or not but I can already do a lot of the things they include. I am able to talk to strangers, manage my assignments, run a household, handle personal problems, and take risks. I can't really manage money yet or find my way around campus, but I have a good start. I don't think skills like finding your way around campus is very reasonable because a student could be new to the school. Most of the others are reasonable though. If I were to choose any school rule to replace, it would probably be the school dress code. I hear lots of people complain about it. I think that it is people's choice to wear what they want, when they want because it doesn't affect other people. Also, I hate the fact that we can't wear hoods or hats because what if my head is cold? Also, I don't understand why we can't wear them.
The rule I would probably replace it with would be is that students shouldn't be allowed to swear in school because it is very offensive. If it is already a rule, then it is not enforced enough at all. Also, students shouldn't be allowed to walk in the hallway during class. Again, if that is already a thing, that should be enforced more. I am thankful for life. I am thankful for a lot of things, actually. For example, my friends and family. I am thankful for a roof over my head, food in my stomach, and a good house. I am especially grateful because I know that not everyone gets those things. When I think of people in those situations, I feel really bad because I cannot imagine what it would be like to live without the things i have everyday.
I also very thankful for great health. I have great parents that support me through everything and also a sister to help to me through the troubles of life. Whenever I get sad or down, I know I can always go to her. Also, I am thankful for sports like basketball and soccer because they are really fun and without them I would be really bored all the time. First of all, my dad is very active in politics and is very into it. Also, he likes to include me. He has told me about all of the elections that he has been through and how much impact it had on the country. He also told me that this election is monumental, and I am glad that I am alive to witness it. Anyways, back to my thoughts. Ever since the presidents were first deciding that they were going to run, I was already pumped up. I really wanted Bernie to win the primaries, but our country decided to have a female president for the main democrat. Only after the primaries and well into the election did America realize they made a huge mistake voting for Hillary. That mistake made this election one of the most controversial elections of all time. And now that they made that mistake, they get really mad. They get so mad that they just end up voting for the opposite person, and in the end, the opposite person won! Mr. Merulla told me that Hillary was off by two percent, and if the two percent would have voted then she would have one. My mom thinks that Trump won because of fivethirtyeight and websites like that. She siad that they were overestimating how well Hillary was doing, so some people just didn't feel like voting because they thought she was going to win already. That makes me really mad and I am just mad at how easily our country could go to shambles. I think this whole election is a joke. I never knew I loved mountains until last year. I had traveled to Colorado last summer, and well, that pretty much changed my life.
Last summer, my family was looking for a last minute trip we could do in under two weeks. School was about to start and we wanted to get out. I was looking into some places that we could drive to. I came across Colorado and instantly fell in love. The scenery and mountains caught my eye and I convinced my parents to go there for our last minute trip. We all packed right after that and started our 13 hour drive. When we got there we hiked and drove on mountain trails. Some driving trails were on the edge of mountains, had no railing, and were 14,000 feet up. That scared my parents to death. I was excited like I have never been before. The scenery was so beautiful that I took at least 100 pictures. The only bad thing about hiking on mountains is that there is very little oxygen and it made it really hard to exercise a lot. Anyways, it was pretty much the best trip I have ever done. Since then I have been begging my parents to go back. Also we might visit some more mountains next summer. |
